What exactly do I get with a custom web design? A Founder's Guide

You already run your business from your phone. Customers write to you on WhatsApp, find you on Instagram, and pay you by ATH Móvil. You answer questions between appointments, post the new menu on a Sunday night, and somehow keep it all moving. Then someone asks the question that keeps coming back: "Do you have a website?"

You know what your business should feel like online. What you do not have is a technical team, six spare months, or the patience to learn a page builder at midnight. That is a completely normal place to start, and it is exactly who a custom website is built for.

This guide walks through the whole thing in plain language: what custom really means, what our packages include, what happens between the first conversation and launch day, how changes work once your site is live, and our answers to the five questions every owner should ask before saying yes.

What custom actually means

Plenty of websites look good on a phone. Plenty of page builders let you arrange sections around your customers, add a contact form, and publish the pages a business needs. None of that, on its own, makes a site custom.

When we say custom, we mean four specific things. They are the same four we explain to every client.

1. The code is built around your vision, not a template that gets tweaked. A template starts with someone else's layout and asks you to fit your business into it. A custom site starts with your business: how your customers decide, what they need to see first, and what you want them to do. The code is written for that, from the first line.

2. Mobile-first, responsive design focused on UX and UI. We design for the phone first, because that is where most people will meet you, and then let the design grow to tablets and computers. UX is how the site works for the person using it: how easily they find what they came for. UI is what they see and touch: the type, the buttons, the spacing. Custom means both are designed on purpose, for your customers, on every screen size.

3. Fast page loads, with no plugins or widgets. Many sites slow down under the weight of add-ons stacked one on top of another. A custom site does not need them. What your site does is built into it, so pages load quickly and there is no pile of third-party pieces to update or to break.

4. Top scores in axe DevTools and Google PageSpeed Insights. These are two of the standard tools for measuring a website. axe DevTools checks accessibility: whether people using screen readers, keyboards or magnification can use your site. PageSpeed Insights, from Google, measures speed and quality on phones and computers. We build to score at the top of both, and you can run both yourself on any page we deliver. Custom work should be something you can measure, not something you have to take on faith.

That is custom. It is a way of building, and it shows up in how your site performs every day.

What our packages include

Our packages spell out exactly what each one includes, so you can see the difference between them before we talk. Our pricing is competitive, and our approach is never cookie cutter: every package shares the same custom foundation described above.

  • Ignite. One focused landing page: your foot in the door, done right. It includes a contact form, a simple AI chatbot, search basics and a sitemap, your Privacy Policy and Terms of Service pages, and your first month of managed hosting. Delivered in 3 days.
  • Launch. Up to five custom pages that work while you sleep. Three AI agents, a simple admin dashboard, a contact form with email automation, search foundations for Google and for AI search, legal pages, and your first month of hosting. Delivered in one week.
  • Scale. Up to eight pages with 3D features and real room to grow. Five AI agents, admin and customer dashboards, CRM and payment integration, sign-in with Google or Apple, full search foundations, legal pages, and your first month of hosting. Delivered in two weeks.

With every package, your domain is registered in your name and managed by us as part of your project.

Whatever you choose, nothing should come as a surprise. Before any work starts, you receive your project documents in writing: what is included, how many rounds of revisions you get, and what happens after launch.

From first conversation to launch, step by step

1. The first conversation

We start by listening. Not by showing templates, and not by asking you to speak in technical terms. You tell us about your customers, your goals, and what a good month looks like six months from now. Who walks in the door? What do they ask before they buy? What do you wish they already knew?

The consultation is free, and you leave it with a straight read on what to fix first, whether or not we work together.

2. Structure and story

Before any design, we map the journey. What does a visitor need to see first, second and third? Where do the questions that stop people from booking get answered? What is the one action you most want them to take?

The answers are different for every business, which is the whole point of custom. For a beauty salon, the first thing a visitor wants is often the list of services and a way to book, so the path leads there in as few taps as possible. For a restaurant, it is the menu as real text a phone can read, the hours, and directions to the door. For a consultant or a professional service, it is proof that you understand the problem, and then an easy way to start a conversation. Same process, very different sites.

This is where your site takes its shape, and it is the step that most affects whether visitors become customers. You do not need to prepare anything for it except your knowledge of your own business, which is the part nobody else has.

3. Design and build

Now it gets built. Design and engineering move together rather than handing work back and forth, which is why a custom site can come together in days instead of months. Depending on the package, that is 3 days, one week or two weeks.

You see real progress on a real site, not a slide deck of pictures. Before it reaches you for review, we test it with axe DevTools and PageSpeed Insights, so the scores are part of the build rather than an afterthought.

4. Review and refine

You review the actual site on the actual screens your customers use: your phone, your laptop, the tablet at the front desk. You tell us what feels off, and we adjust. Your project documents state how many rounds of revisions are included.

This step is collaborative, and the final call is yours. Our job is to make your vision precise, not to overrule it.

5. Launch, and what comes after

Launch is not goodbye; it is where the listening continues. Your site goes live on your domain, we measure how people use it, and we refine from there. From launch day on, your site is ready for the changes a living business makes all the time.

After launch: you control your changes

A website is never finished, because your business never stands still. Prices change. The menu changes with the season. You hire a new stylist, add a service, close for the holidays, or finally get the photos of your shop you have been meaning to take.

So after launch, you decide how changes happen.

Make them yourself. With the Launch and Scale packages, your admin dashboard lets you refresh your text and swap your images whenever you want, from your phone or your computer, with no developer required. Holiday hours on Friday night, a new photo of your work on Saturday morning, a new service added between appointments. It is your content, and you can change it on your schedule.

This matters more every year. Owners now write with AI tools, share photos straight from their phones, and repost what their customers say about them. A site you can keep current yourself is a site that keeps up with how you already work.

Or let us make them for you. Some owners would rather not think about the website at all. For them, we offer a monthly maintenance plan: you send us what needs to change, and we take care of it, along with the upkeep that keeps a site healthy behind the scenes.

Many owners do both. They handle the quick updates themselves and send us the bigger ones. Either way, your site stays current and you stay in control of what it says.

Five questions to ask before you say yes, and our answers

Whoever you choose to build your site, ask these five questions first. Here is how we answer each one, so you know exactly where we stand.

1. Is the domain registered in my name?

Yes. We register your domain in your name and manage it for you as part of your project. Your web address is part of your brand, and it stays connected to you.

2. Can I change my own text and photos, and if I would rather not, who does it and on what terms?

Yes. With the Launch and Scale packages, your admin dashboard lets you update your text and images whenever you like, with no developer needed. If you would rather hand that off, or you are on Ignite, our monthly maintenance plan covers it: you send us the changes and we make them.

3. What exactly is included, and what counts as extra?

Everything listed in your package is included, and your project documents put it in writing before any work starts. Anything outside that, such as new features or a change in scope, is agreed with you in writing first, with the cost and timing stated before it begins. Nothing gets added to your bill without your approval.

4. How many revision rounds do I get, and what happens if we need more?

Your project documents state the number of revision rounds included before we begin. If you need more after those are used, additional rounds are billed at our current rates, and we tell you before any of that work starts.

5. What do I receive on launch day?

Your site, live on your domain. Your first month of managed hosting. With Launch and Scale, access to your admin dashboard so you can make changes yourself. And us: launch day is the beginning of the relationship, not the end of it, and we stay with you long after.

A good partner answers all five plainly and puts the answers in writing. Those are ours.

You do not need a technical team

You need a clear picture of your business, a partner who listens, and a process that keeps you in control. That is the whole list. The engineering, the AI, the search foundations and the payment plumbing are our job, and they happen out of your way.

If you have been putting off a real website because it felt too technical, too expensive, or too much to manage, start with one conversation. Look at what each package includes, ask who handles changes after launch, and choose the one that fits where your business is today. You can grow from there.

At Kernelis Studio, we design and build custom websites with no templates for exactly this kind of owner: a clear vision, no technical team, and full control from day one. When you are ready, we will start the way we always do, by listening.
